development of your proposed printed product and compile an accurate
print quotation enquiry.
Why make a dummy?
Overall Appearance
Making a plain paper replica by hand in the chosen
paper and board means that the designer can examine a particular
project for overall appearance, bulk and weight. This is one of
the most important stages in a project because it is only then that
any visual or tactile quality can be judged, which is especially
important when designing literature.
Practicability
It is only at this stage that a designer can be truly
confident that the choice of material is practical and successful.
If this is not the case any amendments can now be considered - such
as alternative paper choice or changing the format. Further dummies
can then be made.
Client Presentation
Dummies can also prove very useful at presentation
stage with the client so that they are able to familiarise themselves
with the physical "feel" of the piece, which often inspires
confidence.
Overall Weight
Often the overall weight of the printed article must
be considered. This is usually either where the item is to be used
for direct mail or where the finished item is going to be transported
(eg air freight). In such instances lighter weight papers with equal
bulk and opacity can be considered. Large savings in mailing costs
can be made at this stage.
